It has now been two weeks since my letter to Mark McGowan and I have yet to receive a response. Considering he is the Minister for Education and the local member for where I reside and where CLiCK Computer Recycling operates I hope he finds the time to respond and hopefully change his current policy.

Before Mr McGowan’s change in policy Government Schools were allowed to recycle obsolete computer equipment through organisations such as CLiCK, however Mr McGowan changed those rules and ordered all obsolete IT equipment to be destroyed. First I believed this was due to data security, and I pointed out to Mr. McGowan our policy and procedure to deal with data, and suggested he look into Open Source programs which will destroy all traces of data, but we have been made aware that Mr. McGowan has ordered that all parts of obsolete computers be destroyed. Mice, keyboards, monitors… none can be recycled.

Community members and school staff have contacted CLiCK regarding the recent changes and, also like CLiCK, believe this policy is absurd!

If you also believe this policy is absurd then please link to this blog, show your support in trying to change this wasteful policy!
