I have been using my blog for over while now and I though I would recommend to others what I believe are the most essential WordPress Plugins. After scouring the web for advice and on WordPress Plugins I have finally settled for the following plugins:
Akismet - Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not. You need a WordPress.com API key to use it. You can review the spam it catches under “Comments.†To show off your Akismet stats just put <?php akismet_counter(); ?> in your template. By Matt Mullenweg.
Google Sitemaps - This generator will create a Google compliant sitemap of your WordPress blog. By Arne Brachhold.
GoStats - Add web tracking to your blog in seconds. By Richard Chmura
IM Online Plugin/Widget - Display status for MSN, Yahoo!, AOL, Jabber and ICQ via onlinestatus.org. By Martin Fitzpatrick.
Sidebar Widgets - Adds “Sidebar Widgets†panel under Presentation menu By Automattic, Inc..
Sociable - Automatically add links on your posts to popular social bookmarking sites. Go to Options -> Sociable for setup. By Peter Harkins.
Technorati Tagging - Allows the use of Technorati tags in pages and blogs entries. Allows you to have a tag grid with a list of your tags and often often they’re used. By Ben O’Neill.
WordPress Database Backup - On-demand backup of your WordPress database. Navigate to Manage → Backup to get started. By Scott Merrill and Austin Matzko.
WP-ShortStat - Track your blog stats. Visit Dashboard|ShortStat. Based on Shaun Inman’s ShortStat and Jeff Minards’s plugin wp-shortstat 1.2 By Markus Kaemmerer.
