Education.au has an excellent post regarding Sugata Mitra and his Hole in the Wall project.

Speaking at LIFT 2007, Sugata Mitra talks about his Hole in the Wall project. Young kids in this project figured out how to use a PC on their own — and then taught other kids. He asks, what else can children teach themselves?

Sugata Mitra, begins with some discussion about concepts of remoteness and the quality of education being delivered. He defines remoteness both in terms of distance/location and in terms of socio-economic barriers. He says that many remote schools in India do not have good enough teachers, and have difficulties in retaining those they do have. Teachers in remote areas often are focused on how soon they can go to a “better” location. The second issue with the “remoteness” problem is that the infrastructure is often not nearly good enough, and what they have is difficult to maintain.

In addition to this, he believes that educational technology is often trialled first in urban schools, where it already has a chance of success, but will probably make minimal difference. It needs to be trialled or piloted with underprivileged schools, where the impact may in fact be much more significant.

In the video below he also talks about the Hole in the Wall project which he says shows how primary education can be a self-organising system.

For me it raises questions of whether we in fact try to make our student’s learning too stream-lined, too efficient. Whether in fact we need to focus more on the just in time learning, learning because you need to know, rather than always having a defined curriculum which defines the student’s needs.

Filmonic - I am not a tabloid or paparatzi loving type person. However I do like to know what new movies are on the horizon. A few updates a day keep me happy.

EmailJokes - This site is packed full of forwarded goodness. You know those emails you get forwarded from people you may have met only once? This site gives you the urge to forward stuff… but don’t :P

Loldogs (IHasHotDog)- Ok, to be honest I am not that much of a cat fan. I don’t really like Lolcats. But dogs on the other hand I love to death! I often find myself doing voice impersinations of my dogs, so I am glad there is someone out there doing the same thing - in a much more dedicated fasion!

The FAIL Blog - It’s not that I like laughing at other peoples misfortunes. Ok maybe I do… I know, I know, I am a terrible person… But sometimes I just love the irony…

PerthNorg - Besides WA News Headlines Today this is where I get my Perth news goodness from. Even though from time to time the posts that apear on here make me scratch my head wondering where the relevance is, it is a great news source.

Google searches for “news” are most popular in the Northern Territory and Western Australia, while those for “shoes” usually come from Victoria and “the beatles” from South Australia.

The top Australian search terms so far this year are: “games”, “youtube”, “myspace”, “ebay”, “google”, “facebook”, “weather”, “hotmail”, “yahoo” and “real estate”.

Searches for “porn” are most popular in Queensland and New South Wales and least popular in Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

“Over the years, every time there is a major election, we have had people attempt to put up a listing. We catch them very quickly,” said eBay spokeswoman Catherine England.

The “tradition” has continued this year, with at least a half dozen attempts so far to sell votes ahead of the 2008 US presidential election, offers that have all been removed from the system. At least one person has been charged with a crime - selling one’s vote is prohibited in by US federal and state laws.

The computer was bought on the online auction site for £35 ($75) by Andrew Chapman, an IT manager from Oxford, in central England, who found the information on the computer’s hard drive.

It included bank account numbers, phone numbers, mothers’ maiden names and signatures of one million customers of American Express, NatWest and the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), The Independent reported.

Research firm Gartner’s latest figures show Mac sales grew 52 per cent in the second quarter - nearly six times the rate of the PC industry overall.

This is even better than in the US, where Mac sales have been growing at about three times the industry average.

Apple’s share of the Australian computer market in the second quarter of 2008 was 5.3 per cent, according to Gartner, up from 3.8 per cent a year ago. Rival research firm IDC puts the present figure as high as 6.2 per cent.

If Mac sales continue to grow at this rate, the platform will have a double-figure market share within a few years.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your feedback. We recently ended our agreement to show the Lab with Leo Laporte and will be unable to show the last few episodes. While we are pleased to be a niche channel, providing shows that you won’t find anywhere else, programs need to sustain a level interest in order to justify being broadcast. Ongoing audience measurement indicated the Lab with Leo was not in line with viewing preferences of our channel. As you know producers of the program in Canada have also made the decision to end production of The Lab.

The first step is to make sure that your internal network functions. You should setup your second Ethernet wired or wireless card and set its IP address to something like “192.168.10.1? via “ifconfig” utility as follows:
$ ifconfig eth1 192.168.10.1 netmask 255.255.255.0
This setup will be forgotten after a reboot, its better to add these lines to /etc/network/interfaces (replacing any previous declarations of eth1):

# The extended interfaces
auto eth1
iface eth1 inet static
address 192.168.10.1
netmask 255.255.255.0

Check if the previous command worked by typing the following:
$ ifconfig

The result will look like this

ifconfig

inet addr:192.168.1.64 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

Next edit the following file to add the DHCP support on eth1:
$ nano /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf
To save & close the file press Ctrl+X and then Y

Edit these values (add if missing)

# The ddns-updates-style parameter controls whether or not the server will
# attempt to do a DNS update when a lease is confirmed. We default to the
# behavior of the version 2 packages (’none’, since DHCP v2 didn’t
# have support for DDNS.)
ddns-update-style ad-hoc;

# option definitions common to all supported networks…
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
option broadcast-address 192.168.10.255;
option routers 192.168.10.1;
option domain-name “SOMENAME”;
option domain-name-servers 192.168.10.1;

default-lease-time 600;
max-lease-time 7200;

# If this DHCP server is the official DHCP server for the local
# network, the authoritative directive should be uncommented.
authoritative;

subnet 192.168.10.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 192.168.10.10 192.168.10.100;
}

Explanation:
eth1 has the IP address 192.168.10.1 and the dhcp server now uses it as its home ip address.

One more thing needs to be configured before we can run the DHCP server
Open the file /etc/default/dhcp3-server
$ nano /etc/default/dhcp3-server

# Defaults for dhcp initscript
# sourced by /etc/init.d/dhcp
# installed at /etc/default/dhcp3-server by the maintainer scripts
#
# This is a POSIX shell fragment
#
# On what interfaces should the DHCP server (dhcpd) serve DHCP requests?
# Separate multiple interfaces with spaces, e.g. “eth0 eth1?.
INTERFACES=”eth1?

Explanation:
Like the comment it the file says we are specifying the network card which must be used to handle dhcp requests

Finally the setup is done!
So lets run the DHCP server with:
$ /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server start

/etc/init.d/dhcp3-server start
* Starting DHCP server dhcpd3
…done.

If it report fails then look at the error log file ($ less /var/log/syslog and press END to view the last events)

Now you can test the connection to the server from any client connected to the server by:
$ ping 192.168.10.1 (to check if you can see the server)
$sudo dhclient eth0 (where eth0 is the ethernet port used by the client)

The last command is to get DHCP information from the server to the client, which will be reported in the following manner:

$ dhclient eth0

bound to 192.168.10.64 — renewal in 41658 seconds.

Now that we have a connection to the server we want to have internet on the client pc. The internet connection of the server needs to be shared with the clients. The actual sharing component in Linux is done via the firewall (iptables or ipchains depending on the Kernel version)

First enable forwarding of the ipv4 layer
$ nano /etc/sysctl.conf

#
# /etc/sysctl.conf - Configuration file for setting system variables
# See sysctl.conf (5) for information.
#
#kernel.domainname = example.com
#net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts=1
# the following stops low-level messages on console
kernel.printk = 4 4 1 7
# enable /proc/$pid/maps privacy so that memory relocations are not
# visible to other users.
kernel.maps_protect = 1
##############################################################3
# Functions previously found in netbase
#
# Uncomment the next line to enable Spoof protection (reverse-path filter)
#net.ipv4.conf.default.rp_filter=1
# Uncomment the next line to enable TCP/IP SYN cookies
#net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies=1
# Uncomment the next line to enable packet forwarding for IPv4
net.ipv4.conf.default.forwarding=1
# Uncomment the next line to enable packet forwarding for IPv6
#net.ipv6.conf.default.forwarding=1

Now that we can do forwarding lets do it:
$ iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE (the forwarding)
$ echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward (the code to enable forwarding without reboot)

But like all programs the live configuration will be forgotten on reboot, so lets save it:
$ iptables-save > /etc/iptables.rules
Now that it’s saved we need to load the iptables.rules on starting the network:
$ nano /etc/network/interfaces (replacing any previous declarations of eth0):

# The extended interfaces
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
pre-up iptables-restore < /etc/iptables.rules
post-down iptables-restore < /etc/iptables.rules

The complete file /etc/network/interfaces should look like this after all the modifications we applied:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
pre-up iptables-restore < /etc/iptables.rules
post-down iptables-save > /etc/iptables.rules

# The extended interfaces
auto eth1
iface eth1 inet static
address 192.168.10.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
